Washington, D.C.’s shopping scene is a varied and rich one. Yes, we have the hot boutiques and big-name labels, but we also have a healthy vintage and consignment shop scene. From U Street in the heart of the District to King Street in Alexandria, Virginia’s Old Town, bargain-hunters find a treasure trove of “gently used” fashion gems that inject fresh style into any wardrobe. Hardcore vintage alert! Theater and Hollywood costumers look to this Northern Virginia go-to for pristine 1950s tweed suits, Gatsby-era cocktail frocks and Swing-worthy skirts. In-the-know stylists head to Krista Johnson’s well-edited Georgetown boutique for luxury brands at deep discounts. Culled from all over the country (plus Paris!), her racks are filled with high-end brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Gucci.

The spinoff to Berkeley, California-based threads recycler Crossroads Trading Company feels like an upscale boutique—and it is, for luxury labels. Inside, find Louis Vuitton, Alexander Wang and Chanel, plus J. Crew and Tory Burch. New pieces also make it into the racks.

At this subterranean style den, trend-setting guys and gals dig up cool duds, jewelry and accessories (cat-eye sunglasses!) from the 1930s to today. They even score art, housewares and gifts.

Ann Fox’s treasure trove is chockablock with baubles culled from estate sales. In her second-story digs, mid-to-late-century bracelets, Asian and African beaded necklaces, and vintage Chanel earrings dangle enticingly from hangers and displays. Open weekends only.

Fun-loving thrifters get their fix at this down-to-earth Adams Morgan storefront, which features youthful throwbacks like concert tees and summer frocks from the 1960s to today. Meanwhile, the store’s more sophisticated big sis Treasury offers a well-chosen selection of pieces from silk georgette dresses to ostrich feather fascinators.
