Spiking nearly 2,000 feet into the air, Picacho Peak marks the halfway point between Phoenix and Tucson and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Southern Arizona. The peak is four times as old as the Grand Canyon, and was the site of the most significant Civil War battle in the state’s history (reenactments take place every March). Rustic tables, shady ramadas and charcoal grills await picnickers, and five hiking trails ranging in difficulty crisscross the park. The Sunset Vista and Hunter trails definitely offer a challenge, while the Children’s Cave and Nature trails are more of a cakewalk.
