There was a public outcry when it was announced in 2018 that The Basement—one of the countryʼs oldest jazz and blues clubs—would be closing its doors. But in a win for the cityʼs nightlife culture, the venue was saved by Sydney hospitality legends Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham, who own other beloved venues such as The Lansdowne and The Unicorn. The Basement has since re-opened its doors as Maryʼs Underground. The reinvented venue stays true to its roots as a jazz refuge while opening the floor to a wider variety of live music acts. The food and drinks menu has also gotten a relatively fancy facelift, with dishes including whole lobster, caviar, an Australian-focused wine selection and a neat list of house cocktails.
