Quilty at Art Gallery of New South Wales
The art of Ben Quilty is the kind that needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. At the age of 46, Quilty is already widely considered one of Australia’s most important living artists—a fact that is further cemented with the current major retrospective of his work at Sydney’s most significant public art institution, the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Curated in close consultation with the artist, the “Quilty” exhibition traces the arc of his work, known for its rich textures and searing social commentary, across the best part of this century—from early reflections on masculinity to more recent grotesques made in response to contemporary politics.
