Ask the Expert: Top Tips from Eugene Chang for March 2019

Eugene Chang, Chief Concierge at Pier One Sydney Harbour, offers his top tips for exploring Sydney during March 2019

As a local, what is the best market to visit in Sydney and why?
When it comes to local markets, you canʼt beat Rozelle Markets. It's full of unique hand-made arts and crafts, live performances, local artisanal providores and delectable delights.

What is your favourite quirky thing to do in the city?
Partake in “making” my own wine at the Urban Winery in Moore Park. In addition to enhancing your wine knowledge and of course tasting what you have learnt, Urban Winery Sydney offers experiential activities like grape stomping, wine blending, wine pairing etc., so that even if you are not an avid connoisseur, you will still have a great time.

What is the one thing you have to do in Sydney?
One of my favourite activities to do every chance I have is undertake the picturesque Spit to Manly Walk. Itʼs around 10km one way so bring lots of fluids with you. The walk is a combination of coastal, bushlands and suburban trail, ideal for active guests and those seeking to hunt down the perfect photo shot. Do try to start the walk early in the day when itʼs cooler. The track can also get busy later in the day so an early start beats the crowds.

What is your go to for a quick/cheap bite to eat?
From the time I was little, I have always had a soft spot for noodles – Japanese ramen specifically. When in Sydney, do check out the little Menya Noodle Bar, nestled away just under the Darling Harbour footbridge. With their array of different soup bases, even the fussiest tastebuds will be accommodated.

Where is your preferred place for an after-dinner drink?
Hands down, it has to be Maybe Sammy on Harrington Street. Itʼs a chic new place conveniently located just behind the historical Rocks precinct in Sydneyʼs Central Business District (CBD). Maybe Sammy has an extensive menu of local beers, flamboyant cocktails and, of course, my favourite, single pot still whiskeys. It's the only place Iʼve found thus far that stocks my favourite Irish whiskey, Red Breast.
