Lauren Roth wears many different hats. She’s a graphic designer. She’s an artist. And she’s also a painter. Her canvas, though, is unlike any other artist.
“I literally paint on everything,” Roth says. “Wood, wallets, shoes, bags, paddles; whatever there is I can paint on, I will.” Her whimsically designed trucker hats are her latest pièce de résistance, appealing to those who prefer to don a cap that features more than a horse logo or swoosh symbol. Roth’s designs feature anchors, dolphins, waves, feathered peacocks, roosters, multi-legged octopus and dainty seashells that make bold statements above their brims.
“It’s obvious that I’m very inspired about living in Hawaii,” Roth says. “I’ve always been really into drawing animals and sea life.”
Roth’s Yellow Bird Bohemia line of handpainted, 100-percent organic hats are sold at boutiques scattered across Kailua and Honolulu, and at such outdoor shopping art events as Art & Flea (third Thursday of the month at Chadou’s Café on 45 Kihapai St. in Kailua) and Honolulu Night Market (third Saturday of the month at Auahi St. in Kakaako). “It’s nice to see people enjoying your work,” Roth says, of seeing her designs worn around town. “It’s definitely one of the best feelings.”
Naturally, her paintbrush goes beyond these hats and onto canvas. Roth’s wall art—ranging in size, shape and material—are also unique expressions of Oahu’s paradise. Bold teals, yellows and oranges combined with playful patterns of flowers and plant life work well in children’s rooms, or any part of the home that is in need of dressing. From watercolor to blended acrylics to intricate penwork, each piece reminds us to “inspire” and “renew” for “life is beautiful.”
“Hawaii inspires a lot of people to do some really great things,” Roth says. “And I’m lucky to be one of them.”
