Whale Tales

Just 80 nautical miles from Seattle, the San Juan Islands are home to native and migratory pods of Orca whales. At once beautiful and powerful, these whales are particularly active in the summer as they migrate north to feed. Taking a whale-watching cruise on the Victoria Clipper III, a high-speed catamaran, is a great way to celebrate and observe the whales—and other wildlife like bald eagles and sea otters. The 12-hour trip will take you through the Puget Sound to Friday Harbor—an idyllic seaside town in the San Juan Islands where you’ll be able to shop, dine, or wander through a Whale Museum. Then, with an on-board naturalist, you’ll head out for a two-and-a-half-hour whale-watching cruise before you head south through the Puget Sound and return to Seattle.

Day trip $70 and up. Children under 12 are free with an adult. Clipper Vacations, Pier 69, 800.888.2535, clippervacations.com
