Marcado Municipal is as loved for its architectural features as for its plethora of fresh produce. (©Lucato/iStock)
The architecture of this famous covered market, a forest of domed skylights and stained glass, is an attraction in its own right. Built in the 1930s in belle époque style, is houses the city’s largest market for food. It’s worth coming here just to browse aisles bursting with produce: açai from the Amazon, hunks of bacalhau from the North Sea and 1,000 other foodstuffs. Open Mon-Sat 5am-4pm.
