Mission District

The center of Latino culture in San Francisco grew up around what is now the city’s oldest surviving structure, the Franciscan mission known as Mission Dolores, which was established in 1776. The city’s oldest neighborhood is also one of its most vibrant (if you’re lucky enough to be in town during Cinco de Mayo, you’ll get an extra special taste). The area on Valencia and Guerrero streets between 16th and 24th streets offers fantastically fresh ethnic food (so many taquerias, so little time), public art and an eclectic host of shops and businesses by day—and many of the city’s hippest bars and clubs by night. For more on the Mission, see page 16.
