Legion of Honor

High on the headlands above the Golden Gate—where the Pacific Ocean spills into the San Francisco Bay—stands this grand museum, the gift of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels to the city of San Francisco. A three-quarter-scale adaptation of the 18th-century Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris, the museum was built to commemorate California soldiers who died in World War I. The collection includes works by European masters and major holdings of Rodin sculptures. The grounds offer spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco. Closed M.
