Sharp inclines in many parts of the city required the construction of staircases instead of streets. Some are landmarks, and others are quiet corridors used mostly by neighboring residents. Seeking out these idiosyncratic steps will point you to marvelous hidden corners of the city and offer clues to its history and architecture. Many of the climbs are rewarded with dramatic views of the urban landscape meeting the sea and offer a hiatus from metropolitan clamor.
