California Academy of Sciences

A couple of years ago, the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park awoke from an extended hibernation. It took 10 years to unify the academy’s 12 buildings under one “Living Roof,” the nearly 200,000-square-foot rooftop that contains seven “undulating green hillhocks” and 1.7 million native plants. Officially designated as the greenest and most sustainable museum building in the world, the academy is composed of the Steinhart Aquarium, the Morrison Planetarium and the Kimball Natural History Museum.
