Mosteiro de São Bento (São Bento Monastery), rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Mosteiro de São Bento

The most important Benedictine monument outside Europe sits nearby on a promontory overlooking the bay, founded by a group of monks who arrived in Rio from Salvador. Built in the mid 17th century, it boasts a lavish gilt baroque interior, with three sculpted doors and remarkable sculptures of St Benedict, St Escolastica and Our Lady of Monserrat; the last has painted birds’ eggs for eyes. Open daily 7am-6pm.
