Rio’s second oldest convent sits on a small hill where you’ll often see single women here gathered to pray; there are many more women than men in Brazil and St Anthony is traditionally a provider of husbands. The church interior is baroque around the chancel, main altars and two lateral altars, which are devoted to St Anthony, St Francis and the Immaculate Conception respectively. Please check for opening hours & Mass (several times Mon–Fri; once Sat & Sun). Admission free.
