Since 1988, Tahoe Maritime Museum has been acquiring and preserving boats and artifacts from Tahoe's century-plus of maritime history—from gleaming mahogany and chrome speedboats to early canoes and sail craft. Now in a new, attractive facility just south of Tahoe City, the Museum is able to display a large cross-section of its impressive collection.
Lovers of the art and ingenuity of "messing about with boats" will find plenty to oogle here, from launches that traveled between the lakeside resorts of Tahoe's "Gilded Age" in the 1800s to the early speedboats of mid-20th Century. Make sure to stop at the museum's expanded gift shop. During summers, ask if one of the museum’s historic crafts are available for hire on Lake Tahoe.
