Vintner Bill Butcher traded grapes for grain when he opened Port City in January 2011. The first brewery in Alexandria since Prohibition takes its name from the city’s role as a colonial seaport. A former lighting-supply warehouse holds the immaculate brewing operation, where tour leaders invite the curious to sniff hops and admire the “hopzooka.” A tasting room offers samples of brews like the crisp Optimal Wit or briny Revival Stout, plus T-shirts, glasses and growlers to go. $9 (tasting and tour)
