GPS-Led Audio Tour App Lets You Explore With a Virtual Local

Detours uses GPS to track your location and gives audio clues and narration to guide you around the city.

Fancy a city tour led by famous actors, movie producers or in-the-know locals?

Detour, a GPS-led walking tour, harnesses the voices of globally recognized talent alongside local, authoritative voices to create personal audio tours. The app allows listeners to navigate the streets of a dozen cities worldwide while the app keeps up with their exact location and syncs with narration to give a local's eye view, with history, anecdotes and direction.

For example, many people know Peter Coyote as an actor and director. They may not know that in the 1960's he was a prominent member of the San Francisco Summer of Love. He doesn't physically lead tours of the movement's most prominent spots in Haight-Ashbury, but he lends his unique perspective virtually through narration alongside other members of the movement.

The downloadable app features 150 immersive audio tours that include a walk around the Brooklyn Bridge with narration by director Ken Burns, professional skater Eric Tuma Britton guiding listeners through the Venice neighborhood in Los Angeles and Jess Middleton, a die-hard Cubs fan, leading an audio tour through Wrigleyville in Chicago.
