Photo of the Week: Flatiron District in New York

Looking for great food and nightlife, designer-focused shopping in one of New York's iconic locations? Try the Flatiron District.

In jazz, a note intentionally lowered off pitch is called a blue note. One place to hear live music with those notes is Toshi's Living Room and Penthouse in New York City. The blue-and-purple hazed photo of a jazz band on a Saturday night at Toshi's is from our own travel editor Geoff Kohl, but you'll find a variety of music styles at this venue. Now that it's warm out, make sure you enjoy not only the downstairs "living room" portion of the bar (depicted in this photo) but also the rooftop "penthouse" lounge area. Don't leave without checking out the amazing aquarium.

Besides running this popular nightlife destination, Toshi is also part owner of the Flatiron Hotel where his nightclub is housed. It's located just a couple blocks from New York's iconic Flatiron Building, in the heart of the same-named Flatiron District. The Flatiron Building was one of New York's first skyscrapers; though its famously angled promenade rises only 20 stories, in 1903, that was quite the achievement.

Local eatery favorite is Eataly, where gourmet groceries, restaurants and delis all rub elbows, and where the food is superb. Madison Square Park (practically across the street) is lovely in the spring and summer; Broadway Avenue runs through the heart of the district, which hosts many restaurants and trendy shops.
