3 Hikes to Try in the Valley of the Sun

No matter the skill level, outdoor enthusiasts can find a trail that's perfect for them

Three hikes to try for the differently skilled among you:

EASY »
Papago Park is an ideal place for first-time hikers and rambling families. A variety of easy paved and dirt paths meander among the ruddy buttes along the east and west sides of Galvin Parkway. Distant views include Chase Field and the airport in Phoenix, the tubular sails of the SkySong development in Scottsdale, and the manmade lake in downtown Tempe (64th St./Galvin Pkwy. south of McDowell Rd.).

MODERATE » A single, undulating trail inside
Pinnacle Peak Park in north Scottsdale alternates challenge with reprieve. Passage can be slim in some places, and velveteen golf-course views can be distracting, but there’s no law against stopping to catch your breath or take a picture (shown; northeast of Pima & Happy Valley Rds.).

CHALLENGING » The summit trail at
Piestewa Peak is not for wimps, but the cardiovascular and panoramic payoff is worth the effort (Lincoln Dr. east of Hwy. 51).
