Maitland Art Center

The Maitland Art Center showcases the ornate Mayan Revival influences of art deco architect Jules Andre Smith (1880-1959), who also achieved notoriety as a painter, sculptor, etcher, illustrator and war artist. Built in 1937 as a quiet colony for artists to exercise creativity and collaboration, the Maitland Art Center is one of the Southeast's only remaining examples of fantasy architecture and has recently been added to the list of National Historic Landmarks.
