Where and How to Celebrate Pride Month in New York

Check out the many activities you can join to show your support for the LGBTQIA+ community. It is an opportunity to listen, be educated, and get involved.

The warmer weather in New York is reason enough to celebrate the month of June, but for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies, June is cause for a bigger celebration. It is Pride month. It began over 50 years ago with the Stonewall Uprising in New York City following a police invasion of a gay club located in Greenwich Village. Riots and protests followed soon after. The riots quickly became a call for equality, protesting the discrimination of the LGBTQIA+ community. This annual remembrance soon expanded to other cities creating the global Pride celebrations we know today.

NYC Pride Celebrations

Due to the pandemic, celebrations last year were canceled. This year, with many restrictions lifting and mask mandates easing, Pride events in New York are a mixture of in-person and virtual events. The theme for this year is "The Fight Continues."

Youth Virtual Pride

Youth Pride, a celebration for LGBTQIA+ and ally teens, is back again this year as a virtual gathering. Youth Pride has partnered with youth-focused LGBTQIA+ centers, organizations, and programs nationwide to present musical and dance performances. This virtual event is free on June 26. Register at Youth Pride.

Utopia Bagels

Utopia Bagels in Queens has been around since 1980. It has perfected the process of individually hand-rolling each of its bagels, kettle boiling them, and baking them evenly in a 1947 carousel oven. The shop takes pride in each of the bagel creations, including the Rainbow Bagel. The bagel is almost magical in appearance; with all the colors of the rainbow mixed in, it comes with a side of blueberry cream cheese. It is the perfect morning bite for Pride Month.
