EDITOR'S OPINION: Every American man, woman and child should see Hamilton. Every visitor to these shores who wants to know what makes this nation tick should see Hamilton. There is no more entertaining, spellbinding, emotionally engaging and intellectually satisfying musical than this hip-to-the-minute hip-hop, rap and R&B account of the adventurous life of 18th-century Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. It's a history lesson, a love story, a patriotic parable, a political primer and a razzle-dazzle tuner with crackerjack staging, show-stopping choreography, passionate performances, a forceful narrative and songs that are as literate as they are memorable. The debate is on as to who should replace Hamilton's face on the $10 bill. The answer is a no-brainer: Lin-Manuel Miranda, who not only wrote the book, music and lyrics, but also stars as the seriously flawed yet honorable Alexander Hamilton [Editor’s note: Miranda gave his last performance as Hamilton on July 9, 2016.] From unlikely subject matter, he has created a great American musical.—Francis Lewis (Lewis, a former Tony Award voter, is executive editor of Where New York magazine.)
