When the weather turns warm, take a day trip out of the hectic pace of New York City and head to Long Island to enjoy the fresh air and sun.

The Long Island Rail Road—the LIRR, for short—offers an array of getaway packages that families, groups of friends or couples looking for a destination date can enjoy. Find the best of what Long Island has to offer with regard to beaches, water parks, wine country, brewery tours and more during a LIRR getaway.

Beach Packages

Long Beach

With its seaside resort atmosphere—ocean swimming and a boardwalk to stroll down—Long Beach is the perfect spot to soak up some sun and indulge in the numerous local eateries.

There is hourly off-peak train service from Penn Station in Manhattan, Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn and Jamaica Station in Queens—with direct weekend service from Penn Station—to Long Beach Station. The package includes round-trip rail service, discounted admission to the beach and discounts at participating vendors in Long Beach.

For 2017: Long Beach Getaways run weekends from May 27 to June 18; Memorial Day on May 29; Daily June 24 to September 4. From Penn Station, the trip to Long Beach Station take less than an hour, one-way.

Fire Island Beaches

Daily from May 27 to September 4, hop the LIRR to Fire Island and enjoy Long Island’s best beaches to get some sun, catch a wave, go fishing, explore the Fire Island National Seashore and just relax this summer.

Bay Shore Station Packages

Kismet/Fire Island Lighthouse: After taking the LIRR to Bay Shore Station, hop a David Brothers taxi to the Fire Island Ferries to Kismet to begin an amazing day in this multifaceted community of great restaurants, tennis courts, beaches and more. Sayville Station Packages

Cherry Grove: Known for its artistic expressions—murals, mosaics and paintings—produced by locals Cherry Grove also houses spectacular beaches, clubs and restaurants.

Fire Island Pines: The beautiful wind-sculpted pine trees (hence the name!) and zigzag boardwalk make Fire Island Pines an architectural paradise. One of the island’s largest communities, Fire Island Pines features delightful markets, boutiques and restaurants.

Sunken Forest at Sailors’ Haven: Sailors’ Haven is a park considered the crown jewel of Fire Island National Seashore and home to Sunken Forest, which itself is a vast ecosystem of wildlife and plants. Nature lovers and families will have a blast visiting this naturally lush location.

Splish Splash Package

Splash into summer! On weekends and holidays from May 27 through September 4, in addition to weekdays from June 16 through September 1, let the LIRR take you and your family and friends to Splish Splash, Long Island’s water park that was voted as being one of the Best Water Parks in America by the Travel Channel.

Featuring one-of-a-kind water rides—including Battle of Mutiny Bay, Hollywood Stunt Rider, Bootlegger’s Run, Dinosaur Falls and Dr. VonDark’s Tunnel of Terror—Splish Splash has over a dozen water slides, two wave pools, a 1,300-feet-long Lazy River, designated kiddie areas and so much more. In addition to water attractions, there are multiple gift shops and ample dining options on-site.

Long Island Wine Country: Escorted

On July 15, August 5, September 9 and October 28, travel to Long Island’s North Fork region.

The daylong tour begins at Duck Walk Vineyards in Cutchogue where you can enjoy the view of the grapevines as you taste four varieties of wine. From there, it’s off to the historic seaport of Greenport Village when you can buy lunch and browse the shops. The afternoon proceeds with visits and tastings at the North Shore’s Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Pindar Vineyards. If time permits, the day will end at Briermere Farms, where guests can purchase its famous pies and produce.

Bikes, Bites & Brews

Hop the LIRR’s Montauk Branch to the Patchogue Station for a 10:30am start to the new-for-2017 Bikes, Bites & Brews Tour from Long Island Bicycles Tours, available on June 17, July 8 and 22, and August 5 and 19.

Take a relaxing bike ride through historic Patchogue and Blue Point, Long Island, enjoying the sights of the Great South Bay and Fire Island from bay-front beaches. Along the way, the tour will stop for lunch at the retro luncheonette Flo’s, which has been serving burgers, shakes and more since 1926. Riders will also visit two local craft breweries for tastings.

The Bikes, Bites & Brews tour package from Long Island Bicycle Tours includes bike rental with helmet, lunch at Flo’s, tastings at two breweries and cold water during the guided tour. See what’s brewing on Long Island! With over 45 breweries, this tour is a unique and ever-changing experience. On the tour, knowledgeable Brew Guides will entertain and educate you about the history and creation of beer while the group visits multiple breweries in a fun and safe environment.

LIRR offers numerous other packages that make for fun day trips away from NYC. For those who prefer a leisurely day of shopping over something a little more outdoorsy, sign up for the Tanger Outets – The Arches package. Get discounted round-trip rail tickets to and from the Deer Park Station (a little over an hour from Penn Station), shuttle to and from the Tanger Outlets-The Arches, in addition to a voucher to exchange at the Shoppers Services Center for a coupon book worth hundreds of dollars in additional savings. Tickets for all LIRR getaway packages can be purchased at ticket offices and machines at LIRR stations, and online (depending on the package). Package tickets are not sold on trains, so make sure to have everything you need with you before boarding.
