Between the hot dog stands on every other corner in Midtown to Nathan's Famous in Coney Island, New York City is a hot dog town. We've rounded up some of the best dogs in the city!
There isn't a more iconic NYC dog than Nathan's Famous. What started as a humble hot dog shack in Coney Island evolved into a national phenomenon with locations across the US and a thriving retail market. The classic hot dog, the chili dog and the NY cheesesteak dog are popular summer snacks for those that take the F train to the end of the line. And, of course, there's the Fourth of July hot dog eating contest! Pair it with the equally iconic crinkle-cut fries and wash it all down with a creamy orange shake made with Nathan's famous (it's all famous) orangeade.
Crif Dogs has something of a cult following in New York City. The bacon-wrapped "BLT Dog" put them on the map, and it was all smooth sailing from there. There are four other bacon-wrapped dogs on the menu, including the "Good Morning," a play on the NYC bodega bacon egg and cheese. Another New York breakfast staple, the everything bagel, has its place on the signature dog menu as well. Wash it all down with an ice-cold Miller High Life (hot dogs pair well with champagne, right?), local beer, wine, or a craft cocktail.
Flushing is well known for its incredible Asian cuisine, including Korean hot dogs, insanely popular street food in Seoul. The Basac is a no-frills spot to get corn dogs with all the best umami flavors. Squid ink is a popular flavor in Korea and delivers a salty nuance unlike anything else, and the ramyun flakes (think Korean ramen) also bring the umami to the forefront. The potato or cornflake casings give each corn dog an exquisite crunch.
Schaller's Stube Sausage Bar
Back in the 1930s, Yorkville was a hub of German immigrants craving food from home. Schaller's Stube Sausage Bar started as a butcher shop catering to their needs and now serves some of the most authentic German-style sausages and charcuterie in the city. The one-of-a-kind sausage menu showcases the quality that goes into every link. "The Classic" is as...well...classic as it gets. The bratwurst is covered in Dusseldorf mustard and sauerkraut—just like they would have been in Germany. There's also currywurst on the menu, a knackwurst topped with curry ketchup and curry powder. International flavors from Korea and Vietnam also feature heavily on the menu.
La Perrada de Chalo
If Queens hasn't been on your foodie radar yet, it should be. Head there for National Hot Dog Day and stop at La Perrada de Chalo. It's serving traditional Columbian fast food and famous hot dogs with a legendary mix of toppings. If you don't speak Spanish, the "Perros Calientes" is the menu section you want. The "Iraqui" comes loaded up with potato chips, egg, pineapple, cheese and sauce. The "Perro En Salsa Mora" is a unique combination of cheese, blackberry, crushed chips and sauces. It shouldn't work, but it does. Try it.
Kings of Kobe
If you're looking for a socially conscious spot to chow down on the epitome of iconic American fare, Kings of Kobe is the joint for you. All of the franks here are made from 100% American wagyu beef. The "Frydom Fighter" is wrapped in bacon and deep-fried to crispy perfection before getting topped in crispy onions and fry sauce. The tart "Mango? Let's Tango" has a zippy mango-jalapeño relish, lime mayo, crispy onions, and crunchy bacon bits. Skipped breakfast? The waffle dog is what you want. This corn dog variation is dipped in waffle batter and served with spicy maple mayo—breakfast of champions.
