Since opening in 1955, the intimate Upper East Side cabaret has set the standard for sophisticated entertainment in an elegant setting. A Who’s Who of entertainers have spun their magic here, including such legends as Bobby Short, Elaine Stritch, Eartha Kitt and Hildegarde.
Today’s lineup continues the tradition and can run the gamut from Broadway baby Sutton Foster to folk superstar Judy Collins. Screenwriter/director Woody Allen takes a holiday from his day job and plays jazz clarinet on most Monday nights.
Enhancing the boîte’s allure are the whimsical murals by Marcel Vertès, who won two 1952 Academy Awards for his set decoration and costumes for the film “Moulin Rouge.”
A true supper club, Café Carlyle serves French cuisine pre-show.
