Serious-Minded Soap

Coastal clean-up efforts get help from good old soap.

In the wake of 2010’s BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill off the southern Louisiana coast, industrial designer Tippy Tippens founded the BirdProject in an effort to help clean up the environment—with good old soap. The BirdProject’s signature bird-shaped, cypress-scented soaps are made from all-natural, locally sourced ingredients and slowly wash away to reveal handmade ceramic birds at their centers. Created from Louisiana clay, the environmentally conscious keepsakes serve as symbols of coastal recovery and a reminder that 50% of profits from BirdProject sales benefit both the Gulf Restoration Network and the International Bird Rescue foundation (more than $21,000 to date). The soaps, which are found in stores from Atlanta to Seattle, Milan to Hong Kong, are available locally at Dirty Coast and Nadine Blake, among other boutiques.
