An Offbeat Retreat Near New Orleans

Outsider art fan? Explore the Abita Mystery House.

Up for a fun road trip? There are numerous options for interesting excursions just outside of New Orleans—plantation country, Cajun country, Avery Island. For a real adventure, set the GPS for Abita Springs, where the Abita Mystery House never fails to intrigue and entertain. Not just another roadside attraction, this vintage gas station-turned-offbeat museum is the kooky creation of artist John Preble, who has spent nearly two decades amassing the more than 50,000 found objects on display. There’s the “Alien’s vs. Airstream” exhibit, animated dioramas, Darrel the Dogigator, Bufford the Bassigator, a “House of Shards” covered in thousands of pieces of broken pottery, groupings of hair combs, bottle caps, license plates, oddball paint-by-number art—you name it, Preble’s collected it. Strangest of all … admission is just $3.
