Michelin Stars in the Sky

The Royal Festival Hall’s roof seems an unlikely spot for a pop-up restaurant, but The Cube By Electrolux tops the lot. This ingenious, futuristic-looking white structure, designed by Electrolux (who also supply the kitchen equipment) overlooks the River Thames and Big Ben—but don’t let the views detract from the cuisine. Here until the end of September, six exciting British Michelin-starred chefs are working in two-week slots, bringing you their unique menus made up of locally sourced ingredients. In an unusual twist, everyone is encouraged to watch and interact while the chefs are at work, learning tricks of the trade. The elegant long white table (ingeniously designed so it’s “stored” at the ceiling) is lowered for dining, thereby transformed into one convivial dinner space. This is a real treat (an evening meal of at least five courses, with wine pairing, costs £225 a head)—and an exceedingly civilised, fun dinner party.
