The east side of town and the suburbs farther afield are where Memphians go to shop. Retail stores proliferate along Poplar Avenue all the way out into neighboring Germantown and beyond. There, big box retailers and the area’s largest churches have sprung up practically arm in arm. East Memphis is known for an abundance of outdoor activities. Art and nature unite at Dixon Gallery and Gardens, where visitors can peruse the museum’s collection of masterworks and take a meditative walk around the manicured grounds. The Memphis Botanic Garden boasts several themed areas, including a Japanese garden. At Shelby Farms, a 4,500-acre park on Walnut Grove Road, locals take to the trails on bikes, Rollerblades and horses.
