Ask the Expert: Anthony Szostak's Tips for Exploring Melbourne in June

Anthony Szostak, chief concierge at Melbourne Marriott Hotel, shares his top tips for visitors to Melbourne in June 2019.

If you had one day in Melbourne, what would you do?
I’d start with breakfast in one of Melbourne’s buzzing laneways then take a stroll across the Yarra River to the Alexandra and Botanical Gardens. The Kings Domain waterfall makes you forget the concrete jungle is just metres away! I’d then head to the Queen Victoria Market for lunch. A shop called Dragos makes great bureks at great value! I’d finish at a rooftop bar overlooking this magnificent city.

What are some lesser-known galleries in Melbourne you’d recommend visiting?
There are often ‘pop-up’ galleries in Melbourne that weren’t there a week ago, but I think the city’s ever-changing street art is something to behold. Laneways like AC/DC Lane and Hosier Lane are great starting points, and areas like Brunswick Street and Smith Street are great for pop-ups.

What is your favourite thing to do as the weather gets colder?
In winter Melbourne plays host to the Melbourne International Film Festival. I love checking out a flick then discussing it in one of Melbourne’s bars. Berlin Bar serve up some brilliant cocktails, as does 1806.

Where is the best place to get an authentic souvenir?
Australian By Design in the Block Arcade has some great pieces. Jonas at Lightning Ridge Opal Mines on Elizabeth Street will help you find gorgeous jewellery and introduce you to his eight-legged and slithering friends.

If you were spending a weekend out of town, where would you go?
The Grampians is a favourite. There is something about hiking trails in the clean bush air and seeing kangaroos in the wild that never grows old!
