Tucked away near Melbourne's Yarra River, the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne have more than 12,000 different species of plants covering 38 hectares. Established in 1846, the Gardens feature a variety of highlights including the Australian Rainforest Walk, Fern Gully, Long Island and the popular Ian Potter Foundation Children's Garden. The Aboriginal Heritage Walk explores the plant use and history of the Boonerwurrung and Woiwurrung people. A variety of other tours and seasonal events including Moonlight Cinema, theatre and markets take place throughout the year.
