Collecting Comme at NGV
Since the late 1970s, the mission of Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo has been “to make clothes that didn’t exist before”. Season after season, the collections produced by her label Comme des Garçons have radically redefined the possibilities of clothing and reframed ideas of beauty, shape and function. The “Collecting Comme” exhibition currently on show at National Gallery of Victoria digs up decades worth of designs from one of fashion’s most original minds, showcasing more than fifty examples drawn from the gallery’s significant Comme des Garçons holdings. Recurrent themes in Kawakubo’s work are explored alongside several designs by her protégés.
