We speak to Ali Sungkar, chief concierge from The Hotel Windsor, and get his great tips and advice for exploring Melbourne.
Describe your perfect Melbourne day.
I’ll start with a walk around Fitzroy Gardens, then have breakfast on Flinders Lane. I’d then spend the day exploring Melbourne’s laneways, before having dinner at one of the city’s hottest new restaurants, Sunda. Sunda recently won a hat in the 2019 Good Food Guide, and serves great modern South East Asian cuisine. It’s also near the Princess Theatre, which is where I would stop in for a musical after dinner.
What’s your favourite thing about Melbourne
The glamorous Christmas lights on Collins Street, the colourful projections on the Melbourne Town Hall and the Christmas decorations in The Block Arcade and Royal Arcade.
Where should people go to find unique Melbourne Christmas gifts?
If you looking for something Melbourne-related go to Melbournalia on Bourke Street. It is stocked with Melbourne designed and made products—the perfect souvenir or gift. Craft Victoria at Watson Place is also a favourite.
What’s on the top of your Christmas wish
list this year?
To bring the family together for a magnificent Christmas lunch at the iconic Hotel Windsor.
Do you have any tips for New Year’s Eve in Melbourne?
Have a degustation dinner in one of Melbourne’s finest restaurants (with a view of the fireworks display). Or for something different, a picnic at Williamstown Beach.
