Hāna/Southeast Coast

After all the sensory overload along the Hana Highway, the town of Hana provides a welcome respite from the drive. Browse among its offbeat shops offering everything from dried cuttlefish snacks to tabis, great for walking on wet rocks. Stop in at one of the mom & pop cafes selling musubi — the rice balls topped with seaweed and Spam — or see if you can spot celeb homes ensconced in remote hills. Follow the southeasterly curve out of town where major attractions crop up, including Red Sand Beach (nearby Koki Beach has red and black sand), the peaks of Kipahulu, at the base of which lies Charles Lindbergh’s grave, the Pools of Hana, the Pipiwai Trail, and Hamoa, a salt-and-pepper sand beach famous for its bodysurfing.
