Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (©Madrid Tourist Authority)
Housed in a former hospital, Reina Sofia has been beautifully remodelled to hold the nation’s collection of 20th-century art. A stunning extension with glossy red curves by Jean Nouvel houses a library and a superb café-restaurant. It’s a graceful, light-filled building set around a quiet interior courtyard, with a pair of panoramic glass lifts that are almost attractions in themselves. The second and fourth floors are devoted to the permanent exhibition and the first and third floors are used for temporary exhibitions, usually excellent. Mon, Wed-Sat 10am-9pm; Sun 10am-2.30pm. Adult €8 (€4 temporary exhibs only); conc €4 (€2). Free Mon, Wed, Thurs-Sat 7pm-9pm; Sun 3pm-7pm.
