Mad About Maui Mochi

Although Maui Specialty Chocolates earned its reputation for their high-quality chocolates (proprietor Valerie Jones is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America), the real showstopper here is the daifuku mochi (Japanese sweet rice cakes). Soft, gooey, fresh-made mochi is filled, powdered, and sold in trays. Non-traditional peanut butter milk chocolate and dark chocolate truffle-filled are immensely popular, but many swear on sticking with the original (red bean paste). It certainly ain’t broke—no need to fix it.
