The “Playland of the Pacific” has come a long way since its earlier incarnation as an Italianesque resort town, complete with gondolas and a miniature railroad. Today’s Venice features an eclectic and bohemian mix of galleries, shops and other attractions. East of the beach, Abbot Kinney Boulevard is lined with hip independent boutiques including A. Kinney Court, Principessa and Illia and restaurants such as Joe’s and Gjelina. Main Street parallels the beach and extends into Santa Monica; along with bars like Library Alehouse and O’Brien’s Pub, find boutiques such as Monkie, Planet Blue and LF. Buskers, belly dancers and bodybuilders fresh from adjacent Muscle Beach congregate with other members of the counterculture to make Ocean Front Walk a prime people-watching site.
