Life in the Green Room: Kauai

Bethany Hamilton is nuts for Coconuts. The Garden Island native is arguably the most famous female surfer in the world, known as much for her prowess in the water as her tragic back story: As depicted in the movie “Soul Surfer,” a shark severed her left arm in 2003.

It all began at a break called Coconuts in Hanalei Bay. “My dad taught me to surf when I was small, and I paddled for my first wave there when I was about 7 years old. I still go there often when I’m on-island,” says Hamilton, who is still an avid surfer.

Surfing at Coconuts, says Hamilton, helps her find spirituality. The break is so named because “there are a lot of coconut trees on the beach in front of it,” she says.
