The first city visitors to Kauai see when touching down at the airport, Lihue is packed with big-box stores, mom and pop restaurants and government offices, and is where most Garden Isle restaurants come to work and shop. Check out the Kauai Museum, which has a collection of Native Hawaiian artifacts, works by local artists, and hands-on workshops for visitors teaching Hawaiian crafts. Nearby Kilohana Plantation Estate, the home of a former sugar baron, offers tours of the property by a horse-drawn wagon and aboard the revived Kauai Plantation Railway, high tea, meals at its popular restaurant, Gaylord’s, and a luau every Tuesday and Thursday night. The 80-acre Grove Farm Homestead has a museum and tours of the former sugar plantation, and Nawiliwili Harbor is lined with an array of shops and oceanfront dining options.
