The Inimitable Impressionists

An exceptional assembly of masterpieces by the Impressionists has been brought together at the Musée d’Orsay in a show entitled Impressionism and Fashion. Among them is Monet’s Déjeuner sur l’herbe (Luncheon on the Grass) with its nonchalant characters in the fashions of the day that included tiny hats for women and casual suits for men. The majestic exhibition demonstrates that the Impressionists painted more than mere landscapes but also recorded contemporary life with human figures in their everyday setting and moments of leisure depicted in the some 60 masterpieces by, among others, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas and Caillebotte on show. For an Impressionist look, straw hats by Parisian hat maker Marie Mercié and dashing black silk satin scarf-ties for men by Marc-Antoine Barrois are available in the museum shop.
