Cross Island Parkway

The Cross Island Parkway, a four-lane toll road that bypasses the southern portion of William Hilton Parkway and alleviates traffic congestion on that heavily traveled thoroughfare, was opened in January 1998. The 6-mile, limited- access highway stretches from near the intersection of William Hilton Parkway and Spanish Wells Road, at mile marker 2 in the northwestern portion of the island, to Sea Pines Circle. Part of the Cross Island Parkway is a 65-foot-high bridge that crosses Broad Creek at Palmetto Bay. The toll for riding the length of the parkway (one way) in a car has been set at $1.00; it’s $1.75 for three-axle trucks and $3.25 for five-axle trucks. Planners say the new road saves motorists anywhere from 8 to 10 minutes in travel time.
