This Old Florida town is best known for the condo canyons along the beach and for the horse and dog tracks inland. Gulfstream Park is a venerable venue to watch the thoroughbreds run. The big event is the Florida Derby, held every spring. Winners, such as Barbaro in 2006, usually go on to the Kentucky Derby. And the Mardi Gras Racetrack & Gaming Center, formerly Hollywood Dog Track, boasts 1,100 Vegas-style slot machines in addition to greyhound races. Mardi Gras is one of Broward County’s new breed of “racinos” that have popped up in recent years.
