Berlin has many stories of transformations to its name, and Pauly Saal is a shining example. The gourmet German restaurant in the heart of Mitte finds its home in a former gymnasium, in a building that was once a Jewish girls’ school. The very unique location is more than matched by the memorable Michelin-starred cuisine. Pauly Saal opened in 2012 to early accolades, and by the end of 2013, a Michelin star was extended its way. Architectural features from the space’s gymnasium days have been left intact, like soaring glass windows, tiled walls, and parquet flooring, cleverly juxtaposed with luxurious touches like lush, green velvet banquettes and modern chandeliers. Vegetarians will also find something delicious on the menu, but where Pauly Saal really excels is in its dishes of regional meat and game, such as charcoal-grilled ox entrecôte from the Pomerania region just north of Berlin, wild duck encrusted with hazelnuts, or tartare of Baltic Sea salmon.
