Cool Cocktails

It’s hot out there. Cool yourself off with a refreshing summer cocktail. Whether stirred, shaken or frozen, these summer drinks will help you beat the heat.

Neighborhood Services Tavern
Neighborhood Services Tavern—with bartender Jason Kosmas of New York’s Employees Only fame at the helm—mixes up this aged rum highball as his take on the classic Dark ’n’ Stormy. While the Dark ’n’ Stormy features Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, the Thunderball boasts Zacapa 23-year-old Guatemalan Rum, black and red tea-infused vermouth, fresh lemon juice and ginger beer. The end result is a well-balanced, refreshing summer cocktail with the spicy, palate-cleansing bite of ginger. 2405 N. Henderson Ave., 214.827.2405.

Victor Tango’s
This modified daiquiri pays homage to the famous drinker—and legendary author—who, according to popular legend, downed these tart, tasty concoctions in droves at The Floridita in Havana, Cuba. The Hemingway consists of light rum, Maraska Maraschino Liqueur, freshly squeezed lime juice, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and simple syrup. 3001 N. Henderson Ave., 214.252.8595. www.victortangos.com.

Central 214
No cocktail embodies Texas summers more than the margarita, so it’s a shame that many bars and restaurants merely combine cheap tequila with sweet and sour mix. Opting for the original recipe of premium tequila, Cointreau and freshly squeezed lime juice, the 214 Margarita hits all the right notes. It’s tart, yet sweet, and the tequila is not overpowering. En route to salvaging the margarita’s reputation, the 214 variety also sheds a couple hundred calories from the impostors. Hotel Palomar, 5680 N. Central Expy., 214.443.9339. www.central214.com.

The Mansion on Turtle Creek
One of the classiest drinking establishments in town, The Mansion has been mixing up serious cocktails since before it was fashionable. But even The Mansion can have some summer fun; the bar’s Boozed Smoothie blends vodka, Lemoncello and fresh strawberry purée for a light, fruity drink perfect for sipping on the patio. 2821 Turtle Creek Blvd., 214.559.2100. www.mansiononturtlecreek.com.

The classic mojito is a refreshing, people-pleasing drink that’s perfect for a hot, summer’s day. Adding blackberries, blueberries and brown sugar to white rum, lime and mint, Bolsa’s Black and Blue Mojito is a much-welcomed variation on the classic and offers a veritable fruit salad of liquid goodness. 614 W. Davis St., 214.367.9367. www.bolsadallas.com.
