The gallery houses a permanent collection of African and European art, plus temporary exhibitions that include the best of the country’s contemporary art. The original collection was bequeathed to the nation in 1871 by Thomas Butterworth Bailey, and features a collection of 18th- and 19th-century British sporting scenes, portraits and Dutch paintings, plus historical sculpture.
