South African Museum

The city’s most established museum specialises in natural history, ethnography and archaeology, with more than 1.5 million specimens. These range from 700 million-year-old fossils to flora and fauna of Southern Africa and traditional clothing. Permanent exhibitions include Virtual Earth, Darwin and the Cape and African Dinosaurs. There are life-sized reproductions of the reptile-like creatures, including walk-around dioramars and examples of the actual fossils. It also houses the Planetarium, with 1-hour shows (check for programme). Open daily 10am-5pm. Adult R30; child/conc (6-18) R15; family R75.
