Nantucket Island, Mass.

Once a booming whaling port, Nantucket retains much of its 17th-century architecture and offers the rustic airs of a seaside village with cottages and old-fashioned lamps still lining its winding thoroughfares. Officially, Nantucket is a National Historic District, offering many museums and historic sites, and while 40 percent of the island is protected conservation land, there is still plenty of room for a robust dining scene.
