When they realized that the city’s historic zoo had remained in the Western part of the city, East Berliners decided to turn the park of the Schloss Friedrichsfelde into their own brand-new zoo. Compared to the Zoologischer Garten, the Tierpark is larger and the animals are more scattered out, giving many (but not all) of them more space to run around. The elephants’ pavilions are built in pure GDR style. Open 9am–6pm daily (to 5pm in winter). €12/6.
