Little is left of its ancient splendor: The pompous colonnades and majestic buildings that once made Alexanderplatz a luxurious spot have been erased by WWII bombs and replaced by grey Socialist buildings. Berlin’s most famous square is now a chaotic concrete esplanade and a transport and shopping hub, but it’s a good starting point for sightseeing in the Eastern districts. Flanked by a towering department store, a shopping mall, and a multi-storey electronics store, "Alex" attracts masses of window shoppers with its big labels and chain stores. The square still hosts a picturesque Christmas market and festivals throughout the year.
