Lost & Found

Mathematicians and history buffs gather at The Walters Art Museum to examine The Archimedes Palimpsest, the oldest surviving copy of works by the Greek scholar of antiquity. Lost and Found: The Secrets of Archimedes, the culmination of a 12-year-long conservation project, follows the journey of the medieval manuscript, its reconstruction and its secrets. Visitors to the exhibit see the state-of-the-art imaging technologies used by scholars to reverse more than a thousand years of weather, travel and abuse the book endured. The intensive restoration process revealed original, erased text that confirms that Archimedes anticipated modern mathematics, physics and computing.
